LUCASTA

You made that very clear.
But why not with me?

LUCASTA
Because you don't like them—
American musicals. Do you think it's any compliment
To invite a woman to something she would like
When she knows you wouldn't like it? That's not a compliment:
That's just being . . . patronising. But if you invite me
To something you like—that is a compliment.
It shows you want to educate me.

COLBY
But I didn't know
That you wanted to be educated.

LUCASTA
Neither did I.
But I wanted you to want to educate me;
And now I'm beginning to believe that I want it.」

Pero si el otro día te invité…

LUCASTA
A ver un musical norteamericano.

COLBY
Bueno, había oido que te apetecía ir a verlo.

LUCASTA
¡Sí, pero no contigo!

COLBY
Lo dejaste muy claro.
Pero, ¿por qué conmigo no?

LUCASTA
Porque a ti no te gustan
esos musicales norteamericanos. ¿Te parece un halago
invitar a una mujer a algo que le gusta
cuando sabe que a ti no te gusta? Eso no es ningún halago.
Es adoptar un aire... protector. En cambio, si me invitas
a algo que a ti te gusta… eso sí es un halago,
con ello muestras que quieres educarme.

COLBY
Pero yo no sabía
que quisieras ser educada.

LUCASTA
Ni yo tampoco. Lo que quería
era que tú quisieras educarme.
Ahora empiezo a pensar que sí lo quiero.」
